Since its initial episode in 1998, MTV's award-winning True Life documentary series has told remarkable real-life stories of young people and the unusual subcultures they inhabit. Whether documenting the lives of gay marriage activists, individuals dealing with obesity, or teens in high school--the True Life series tells its stories solely from the varied voices and points-of-view of its characters--putting the series in the unique position of reflecting the state of youth culture at any given moment.
MTV decided to feature the "subculture" of Nuyoricans with True Life: I'm Nuyorican. The title alone, may make one uneasy because what can they possibly say about US? MTV's description says: Naizsha, Rose and Jose attempt to balance their Puerto Rican heritage with the modern world they live in.
There are 3 characters: Naizsha wants to escape by joining the Air Force; Rose struggles to fit in with her community; Jose tries to stay clean for his boxing career.
Let's start from bad to worse. The story of Naizsha is a young girl who is extremely dispectful to her mother, and lives in an "overcrowded" apartment living with her mother, stepdad, brother, his girlfriend, blah, blah, blah and don't forget the two dogs- or were they just the shortest and ugliest Puerto Ricans in the family??? So Rose's issue is that she is too fat to join the Air Force. She is shown in the intro saying, "Remember when I got arrested?"
Then there's Jose the aspiring boxer. At only 20 years old they make him out lucky to be alive because as he says, "This is the third funeral I've been to this year". He dropped out of school and as any typical 20 year old, he likes to go out and party on the weekends.
And finally, there is self-proclaiming - "non-typical-Puerto-Rican", Rose. WHY was she put on the show? Wellllllll, why else but that she loosely uses the word s.p.i.c. Are we to believe that this nitwit never heard that that word is a racist, hateful word? And she probably never left the four corners of her block because she proclaims that she doesn't speak spanish and that her friends think she's a white girl. But get this- she is very ethnic looking with olive-colored complexion and chemically-straightened hair. AND get this- she speaks with a HEAVY Nuyorican accent. Get out of New York, girl, so you can see! LMAO I am sure the producers must have LOVED filming that! Picture it: she says, "I dawnt speek spaneesh becawz dis iz Amereeka. Speek englissssshhhhh!" ĦAy Virgen! I can see the blanquitos in Nebraska laughing except that they probably can't understand a word she's saying. I'm surprised MTV didn't put subtitles.
So then, Linda Nieves-Powell you know - The one that has the hit play entitled "Yo Soy Latina!" (with an explanation point) - The one who owns the company named "Latin Flavored Productions" - None other than Linda Nieves-Powell. You know the one. The one that was named as the top 100 influential Hispanics or something like that by HispanicBusiness Magazine. Yeah you know - the REAL Nuyorican - LNP. She takes offense to the MTV's True LIfe: I'm a Nuyorican.
In typical gutsy LNP style - btw she's also the author of the book "Freestyle" - she gets the producer on the show and tells him: WTF? In a very profession manner of course. According to LNP: The minute I finished watching that episode I immediately went looking for the responsible rat bastard who obviously lacked the research skills and high moral ground to produce an episode with three positive and proud Nuyoricans (as stated in their audition notice).
The answer she gets from the producer of True Life: I'm a Nuyorican, Carlos Puga: True Life isn't a news magazine show and doesn't ever try to tell all that there is to tell about a particular subject. We focus more on individual stories and less on the overarching story of the topic we're delving into.
LNP offers him a solution: Change the name of the show!
Well, MTV seems to have heard her voice. However their response was this:
"At this time we are going to pass on issuing a comment as the episode is a couple of months old and we have not received direct backlash from the Hispanic community."
The NY Daily News picked up the story of LNP vs. MTV. And LNP went from officially p.o.ed to downright disappointed with her people saying: "I'm tired of fighting...seriously."
My only hope is that real Nuyoricans and self-respecting Latinos in general are tired of the disrespect; that the REAL Latinos DON'T watch that MTV show and that the real Latinos continue to watch real shows like "Yo Soy Latina!" and other LNP's projects.
Hey MTV! Linda Nieves Powell is our true example to the world of a real Nuyorican! LNP is our TRUE LIFE!
