Hispanic Voting Rights Were Violated

Port Chester, New York, just 25 miles from NYC
with a population of about 50% Hispanic,
has violated the Voting Rights Act of Hispanics.

A U.S. judge ruled Port Chester's  election system
denies equal participation for Hispanics
in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965,
the landmark law associated with
the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

"The at-large election system
for electing members of the board of trustees
prevents Hispanic voters
from participating equally in the political process
in the village," Judge Robinson wrote in the 56-page ruling.

Robinson ordered the Justice Department
and the village to submit proposed solutions.

If this doesn't make you go out there and VOTE, nothing will.
Puerto Rican Barbie Doll

This doll introduced in the
early 90's caused some
controversy.  It has a "mini
history lesson" on the box:
''Puerto Rico was granted
permission to write our own
constitution in 1952, and
since then we have governed
ourselves.''
Wow!  Granted permission?
The mini- history lesson continues:
''discovered in 1493 by Christopher
Columbus, who claimed it for Spain.''
They never mentioned the
Tainos,
of course.

A rep from Mattel said, "[We} have
introduced ... a Mexican and a Peruvian
Barbie, without complaints."
Puerto Ricans!  They get their own doll
and they still complain!
