In essence, Huntington is afraid that this will happen
with the Mexicans. “Is Miami the future for Los
Angeles and the southwest United States?” He notes
the difference in class. “The early Cuban immigrants
in South Florida were largely middle and upper
class." He is still intimidated by the Mexicans
because, “In the long run, however, numbers are
power, particularly in a multicultural society, a
political democracy, and a consumer economy.”
We could all learn something from Huntington after
all. That numbers are power, that there is strength in
numbers, that together we can rise up and conquer
the world, that the Latino community should be united.
Last section: Irreconcilable Differences says there is
a “clash” between Hispanic and American values or
as he calls it, “Anglo-Protestant values”.
As his theory goes, if the Mexicans continue
immigrating and not assimilating, they can build their
own enclave – a little Mexico so to speak. His
answer to this “threat” is for Mexicans to reject their
language and culture to become essentially- Gringo.
As he explained when he spoke about the Spanish
language. “Second-generation immigrants often look
down on and reject their ancestral language and are
embarrassed by their parents' inability to
communicate in English. Presumably, whether
second-generation Mexicans share this attitude will
help shape the extent to which the third generation
retains any knowledge of Spanish.”
Gimme a break, chico!
Huntington doesn’t believe an American can speak
two languages and still be American. He doesn’t
believe that an American can be bi-cultural and still
be American. “Continuation of this large immigration
(without improved assimilation) could divide the
United States into a country of two languages and
two cultures. A few stable, prosperous
democracies—such as Canada and Belgium—fit
this pattern. The differences in culture within these
countries, however, do not approximate those
between the U.S. and Mexico, and even in these
countries language differences persist.”
Finally, to add insult to his ignorance, he resorted
back to his back street roots perhaps, when he was
a snot-nosed kid in the playground and ended his
tirade with a backhanded, under-the-belt assault,
threatening Hispanics. “Such a transformation would
not only revolutionize the United States, but it would
also have serious consequences for Hispanics,
who will be in the U.S. but not of it.”
WHY wouldn’t we be “of it”? Isn’t that the whole point
of holding on to our culture and values because
Anglos like Huntington don’t want us anyhow? Is that
anyway to convince us to assimilate?
And as the new snot-nosed kid in the schoolyard
who feels needlessly threatened by his new
classmates, he belts out a futile, relentless childish
“ta-na-na-na-na-NA” as he runs away: “There is no
Americano dream. There is only the American
dream created by an Anglo-Protestant society.
Mexican Americans will share in that dream and in
that society only if they dream in English.”
